WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus
History-Social Sciences Education Program
If you want to be a high school social studies teacher, Western Carolina University is the place for you. Our Social Science Education Program, housed in the history department, is the largest secondary education program at the college. With over 100 majors, you will have a supportive and innovative group of peers.

In our four-year program—Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) in Social Sciences—you will complete a double major (social sciences and history) and coursework for North Carolina licensure. And you will get a job—over 93% of our students are employed in public schools or in enrolled in graduate programs.

Our students are incredibly involved in campus life. They participate in undergraduate research conferences, weeklong exchanges with North Carolina A&T, organizing high school essay contests, internships at local historic sites, and in department, university, and statewide merit scholarships for social studies educators. Students have lots of exposure to regional public schools and can work in local after-school and tutoring programs.
