Elementary Education Second Degree Program
This program is designed for people who have already earned a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution in a field other than education. Successful completion of the elementary education program will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) degree and certification for teaching at the elementary level (K-6).

Licensure-only plans are another option for students with earned Bachelor's degrees.

Overall Course Requirements

All students must complete a total of 68 hours including:

  • Professional Education Sequence (27 hours)
  • Major courses (41 hours)

Professional Education Sequence for Elementary & Middle Grades

The professional education sequence for Elementary & Middle Grades Education requires 27 hours including:

  • EDCI 231 Historical, Social, & Philosophical Foundations of Education , 3 hours
  • PSY 320 Child and Adolescent Development, 3 hours
  • PSY 321 Educational Psychology, 3 hours
  • SPED 337 Teaching Exceptional Children in the Elem & Middle Grades, 3 hours
  • ELMG 484 Supervised Internship I, 3 hours
  • ELMG 485 Supervised Internship II, 9 hours
  • ELMG 495 Seminar for Student Teachers, 3 hours

Elementary Education Major Course Requirements

The major course requirements for Elementary Education include 41 hours as follows:

  • MATH 321 Theory of Arithmetic I, 3 hours
  • MATH 322 Theory of Arithmetic II, 3 hours
  • ART 363 Art for Children, 1 hour
  • MUS 301 Basic Skills, 1 hour
  • PE 361 Physical Education for the Elementary Teacher, 1 hour
  • EDRD 303 Literature for Children and Youth, 3 hours
  • EDEL 311 Elementary School Methods & Curriculum, Grades K-2, 2 hours
  • EDEL 312 Elementary School Methods & Curriculum, Grades 3-6, 2 hours
  • EDEL 390 Block, 1 hour
  • ELMG 415 Elementary & Middle Grades Communication Skills, 3 hours
  • ELMG 416 Elementary & Middle Grades Science, 3 hours
  • ELMG 417 Elementary & Middle Grades Social Studies, 3 hours
  • EDEL 418 Elementary Mathematics, Grades K-3, 3 hours
  • ELMG 419 Elementary & Middle Mathematics, Grades 4-9, 3 hours
  • ELMG 466 Computers in Education, 3 hours
  • EDRD 334 Reading Instruction in the Elementary School, 3 hours
  • EDRD 474 Practicum in Teaching Reading , 3 hours

Grade Requirements

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better on hours attempted at WCU to be admitted to the teacher education program in Elementary Education and must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA to continue in the program.

Elementary education majors must earn a grade of C or better in all required courses except liberal studies and SAC courses but including ENGL 101 and ENGL 102. This C or better requirement includes MATH 321, MATH 322, PE 361, ART 363, and MUS 301. If a student fails any course in the professional education sequence twice, the student is withdrawn from teacher education.
