Geographic Names Information System
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the U.S.G.S. in cooperation with the US Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the database is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by state, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information.
GEOnet Names Server
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. Approximately 12,000 of the databases 3.3 million features are updated monthly with names information approved by the US Board on Geographic Names (US BGN).

Historical Maps
Panoramic Maps at the Library of Congress
Images of panoramic maps, a cartographic form used to depict US and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Also known as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are non-photographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective.
